Wheelie
Bins & Burglars
Wheelie bins, we either love them or hate them!
Burglars love them because they provide a pretty good idea if you
are at home on 'bin day'. If your wheelie bin is still out long
after the refuse collection has been and gone, then chances are,
you are out.
Nobody has invented the self-return wheelie bin yet so we need
to rely on the human factor. If your household goes to work and
school like most and the home is empty during the day, you cannot
return your wheelie bin to where it normally lives unless your bin
team empty it before you leave home.
Elderly, infirm and vulnerable neighbours may not be able to return
their bins and this can attract burglars' attention too - so what
is the solution?
Bin Buddies! No, it isn't a gadget, just an initiative that
I thought of to assist in our battle against the burglar. A 'Bin
Buddy' is a neighbour who you can partner with. For instance you
may be able to put out their bin as well as yours before the bin
collection and they may be able to return it during the day when
you are unable.
If you could also volunteer to help a neighbour with special needs
or disability, young or old, who cannot return their bins, it will
help to reduce crime and the fear of crime by delivering a little
peace of mind. Neighbourhood Watch is all about watching out for
your neighbours.
